Definition

A "content management" system (CMS) is a software system for organizing and facilitating the collaborative creation of documents and other content.  A CMS is frequently a web application used for managing websites and web content, though in many cases, CMSs require special client software for editing and constructing articles.

The term was originally intended for website publishing systems and website management systems.  However, it now refers to a vast range of technologies and techniques, including portal systems, wiki systems, and web-based groupware.

Content management is now seen as a key strategic requirement, with CMSs being implemented as a core business system.
